FOP REMEMBERS: GIRLS@PLAY
Girls@Play were simply fantastic. We DARE you to disagree.
* They had a nice little song called "Airhead" that went "Pretty face! Head full of
* They all had "professional" characters! These were not very convincing (specially the "businesswoman" one, who was made to wear a midriff-revealing top, with a business suit sort of outfit. Then in the video, it's as though someone realised halfway through that she didn't really look like a businesswoman at all, so they made her pretend at least 4 times to be talking importantly on a mobile phone, while miming her bit.
* They did a cover of "Respectable" that, to be quite honest, we have never heard.
* Then it was suddenly all over, for The @Play.
One of the best things about them is the following, from a Girls@Play website. There is considerable, unexpected poignancy in this sad little timeline.
New British girl group Girls@Play are the latest act to emerge from the Stock & Aitken stable of artists.
They are Vicky - the cowgirl, Rita - the mechanic, Lynsey the traffic cop,
Lisa-Jay - the executive and Shelly - the pilot.
The above is followed IMMEDIATELY by this shocking/hilarious development:
Girls@Play have decided to split up. After two singles and three years of promoting, Girls@Play have decided to go their separate ways.
The funniest bit of this is the use of the word "decided". As though a peak chart position of number 18 had nothing at all to do with it.

I thought the best bit was that the first three were Cowboy, Mechanic and Cop.
I think Stu needs to manage a girlband.
Although I do mourn the @Play, my heart was ripped out by the disbanding of Girl Thing. 'Girls on Top' - possibly a homage to the quietly unhilarious French and Saunders show - was one of the best records of the last five years. And featured them appearing to be set on fire during the video. While holding hair dryers.
Bliss.
